The main characters of Animal Farm are animals. The animals living on a farm rebel against the humans who exploit them and take control of the farm. Their goal is to create a more equal society. The smartest of them, the pigs, quickly form a leadership team, but unfortunately, they lead the revolution astray. A dictatorship even more oppressive and cruel than that of humans is now established.
In this novel, George Orwell critiques a historical reality. It is clear that the pig leader in the story represents Stalin. While the other characters may not directly resemble real people, they are individuals that could exist in a dictatorship environment.
