Among the passengers of a large ship departing from New York to Buenos Aires is the world chess champion, Mirko Czentovic. A group of chess enthusiasts loses the first game they play against him. As Czentovic is about to win the second game, an unexpected intervention by a man named Dr. B. leads the game to a draw. Dr. B. is then persuaded to play a game with Czentovic alone. However, what begins as a casual chess game will bring back traumatic memories for Dr. B., memories shaped by the climate of fear and horror created by the Nazis.
